Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Position.

Initially, this album may look more like an arduous scholarly challenge than the latest popular music record from a musician whose previous hit featured an international K-pop star. Divided across 4 separate movements and voiced in thirteen languages, this is a head-spinning symphonic opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and physical change, often via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot heavenward here, buoyed by the lush presence of a full orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of contemporary artists look quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that this album manages to escape dry academic posturing is nearly a miracle, and sole praise going to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and the present, its scale feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What really raises her fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary Björk at her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its tornado. When she is tearing hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Joy

That playful spirit comes forth brightly during the stirring Italian song inspired by a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over more than four moments. Suddenly, all the music drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo crashes in like comedic force. The track immediately segues into the frenetic single driven by racing strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux lies in you rarely quite understand—or even want to know—what it is going next."

Almost every track ends in a totally distinct place from where it started. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight symphony only to collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing her earlier trap-infused style starts off dark and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic choir arrive to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment & Accessibility

Another crucial balancing act of the album is navigating the line between bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to break into the upper reaches of key charts: at its core a suite of utterly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in English builds around a refrain that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. That trick gets echoed by another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number charms with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of other heartbreak songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but never feels like hard work. While some major pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the characters at the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's most endlessly creative practitioner.
