Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
